Why is methionine important for young chicks?

Today's poultry feed producers have a variety of options to supplement the bird's diet with methionine (Met), including DL-methionine, and more recently L-methionine, but Evonik says Met's complementarity is accurate for the initial stage. It is important.

The company has just produced a primary product of Met supplements in broiler feed, and we spoke with Dr. Rose Whelan, senior manager of animal physiology research at Evonik, to learn about the use of this amino acid in young chickens.

"Methionine is the first limiting amino acid in broilers; it's important that you keep the levels of methionine and cysteine in your diet so that you don't feed those important amino acids."

“In the initial stage, you are not so concerned about the performance of breast meat production, thigh meat or return on investment. You are setting up the system at the end of the growth cycle. Therefore, at this early stage, you are more worried about ensuring that the chicks are in the elderly. The best start to grow at the most effective level, and also developed all the systems behind it - the immune system and the gastrointestinal system - if you mistake this stage, you can let the animal feed in later life Feeding efficiency is low and more susceptible to illness."

Risk of insufficient supply of amino acids

Feed producers also need accurate information on the bioavailability of all sources to meet the methionine needs of broilers for optimal bird performance and reduced production costs.

“If you are considering the source of methionine in your diet and you are using bioavailability [data] to determine how many other products should be added to your feed formulation, you may end up accidentally ingesting methionine. By the way, the levels of methionine and cysteine in your feed formula will be too low, which will directly affect the growth of [birds] or inhibit the development of all those systems that determine optimal growth in the early stages of life. In performance."

There has been an industry debate about the issue of bioavailability from different sources:

It has previously been claimed that DL-Met may not be as effective as L-Met in meeting the intestinal cell requirements of young chickens, and it has been shown that dietary Met + cysteine (Cys) levels can be reduced by 10% when used. L-Met in poultry diets. “From all our studies, we found that DL-Met and L-Met are also bioavailable. Our product is DL-Met, but if the feed manufacturer uses L-Met because it is easier to local For use or for other reasons, we recommend using 1-1. We have heard some suggestions for floating in the field, you can use L-Met in 90% of DL-Met [include level]. However, from us all In our research, we found that this is definitely not true, and [in this way] will risk the need to feed, first limiting the risk of amino acids."

She said research shows that from the breeding season, the source of the metropolis is comparable to nutrition. A 2016 paper pointed out that when D-Met or L-Met was added to their diet, the growth performance of broilers at the initial stage was the same. She said an early study from 2007 found no difference in growth performance in chicks fed DL-Met or L-Met in a purified or actual low-protein diet.

Dr. Whelan added that a recent trial compared L-Met products with a growth performance and 90% purity of broilers diluted to 90% with DL-Met. There was no difference in the relative bioavailability of the two dietary Met.

Broiler immunity

Given the genetic advancement, the growth potential of chickens has improved every year. She said that Evonik will continue to compare methionine every year.

“We also ensure that the total demand for digestible amino acids and our ratio to lysine are always up to date.”

As an immunologist, Whelan has been studying biochemical pathways for how broilers use methionine.

"I have seen many pathways in the immune response, of which methionine is indeed a necessary substrate for the production of different types of immune cells, and is capable of producing an antibody response that is basically capable of responding to diseases.

“So, when we start to remove antibiotics and start how to keep birds healthy and keep the genes under optimal stress, we must also consider the methionine requirements of [broilers] so that they not only achieve optimal growth potential, And their optimal development in immune response, making birds as resistant and healthy as possible throughout the growth cycle."

In analyzing the amino acid requirements for the development of the avian immune system to optimal levels, Dr. Whelan is also assessing whether amino acid levels will vary depending on the type of disease stress that broiler production may face in different parts of the world.
